Interior Painting Guide: Costs, Sheens, and How Long It Takes

Paint is the cheapest transformation in any home — and the one most often done badly. Around Spring, a single room typically runs $300–$900 painted professionally, and the difference between a job that lasts two years and one that lasts ten is mostly preparation and sheen choice.

What interior painting typically costs

Two things move the price more than paint quality: prep (patching, sanding, caulking, priming stains) and color changes — going from a dark color to a light one often means an extra coat everywhere.

Sheens, room by room

How long it takes

A single room is usually 1–2 days including drying between coats. A whole interior in an average Spring-area home runs 4–7 days. The schedule killer is not the painting — it is skipping dry time, which shows up later as peeling and flashing. Painting a whole house as part of a bigger project? It goes nearly last — see the sequencing in our whole-home renovation guide. And if the cabinets are part of the plan, cabinet painting uses a different, harder process than wall paint entirely.

Common questions

Two, almost always. One coat can look fine in the store light and patchy in yours, and it wears faster. The second coat is where the durability is — it is not an upsell.
No. Modern low-VOC paints let you live in the house; we work room by room and most families sleep at home throughout. You will want furniture moved to the center of each room and pictures off the walls.
Light. North-facing rooms make colors cooler and darker; warm bulbs make them yellower. Always test a large swatch on the actual wall and live with it for a day before committing.
