Cabinet Painting vs. Replacing Your Cabinets

Cabinets decide a kitchen's budget. Replacing them runs well into five figures; painting a solid set of cabinets typically costs $1,500–$4,500 for an average kitchen and changes the room just as dramatically. Here is how to know which one your kitchen actually needs.

The three options, honestly priced

When painting is the right answer

If the cabinet boxes are sturdy, the drawers still glide, and you are not moving the sink or stove, painting is almost always the smart money. Oak cabinets with a heavy grain can be filled and smoothed for a modern look. Done properly — with the doors removed, sprayed in a controlled setup, and cured before rehanging — a painted finish lasts for years and can be touched up. Done with a brush and wall paint, it peels at the handles within a year, which is why cabinet painting costs more than painting a wall of the same size.

When to replace instead

Water damage is the deal-breaker: swollen, crumbling particleboard under the sink or beside the dishwasher cannot be painted back to life. A layout you hate will still be a layout you hate in a new color. And if half the drawers are broken, the repair math quietly becomes replacement math. Our kitchen remodeling guide shows how cabinets fit into the total budget, and if the walls are getting painted too, our interior painting guide explains why cabinet enamel is a different product entirely.

Common questions

With proper prep and cabinet-grade enamel, expect many years of normal use — comparable to a factory finish. The first places cheaper jobs fail are around handles and the sink cabinet, where grease and water attack the coating.
Sometimes. Thermofoil that is peeling must be removed first, and the surface underneath needs the right primer. If the coating is separating in many places, refacing or replacing is usually the better spend.
Typically 4–7 days: doors and drawers are removed and finished separately, boxes are painted in place, and everything cures before reassembly. You keep partial use of the kitchen most evenings.
